CHOREOGRAPHIC RESIDENCIES & COMMISSIONS

Kristi Faulkner accepts commissions to set her choreography on other companies or dance programs. Residencies may also be designed to allow student companies or community members to perform as part of a collaborative performance with Kristi Faulkner Dance.

WORKSHOPS & RESIDENCIES

TEACHING/EDUCATIONAL RESIDENCIES

Kristi Faulkner Dance can design residencies for all ages that meet the curricular or arts education needs of the school or dance program. Residencies may include movement workshops, lecture demonstrations, master classes, performances, and classroom visitation for participation and discussion.

Moving Literacy Residency Program

This residency program promotes literacy and creativity by integrating movement activities with children’s literature. This program is designed for ages 3-7 and ideal for kindergarten and pre-school classrooms.

INDIVIDUAL WORKSHOPS
Contemporary Floor Work
Based on the idea that the floor is an active partner in our dancing, we will seek to “make friends” with the floor and embrace the unwavering support it can offer. Participants will connect with a sense of weight through earthbound phrases and guided improvisation, developing an intimate connection to the floor by investigating multiple points of contact for achieving efficiency moving in and out of the floor.

Falling and Rolling
Explore sensation and surrender while learning to make friends with gravity. Dance is physics - we will explore the ways in which momentum and surface area can help us achieve efficiency moving in and out of the floor. While maintaining a continuous flow of energy and efficient use of muscle tone, we will hover on the edges of suspension and surrender to impulse.

Queering Performance
Queering Performance is a commitment to rejecting normativity in the performance of identity and embracing diversity to offer insight into alternate ways of being. As a queer artist, Kristi Faulkner creates space for multiple meanings in her work and disrupts expectations by making visible the contradictory and unstable edges of identity. Because dance is porous, meaning can be inserted and changed based on the identity of the performer or viewer. This workshop explores techniques to provide alternate ways of looking at the world, giving visibility to those on the margins of society.

Movement and Voice
This class will begin with a series of full-bodied vocal warm ups, designed to access the “touch of sound” – i.e. the place where our voice originates and can be altered by our physicality.  Participants are guided through exercises where they will learn to integrate their own voice into self-generated movement phrases. This class is designed for all levels of movers.

Performance Techniques
Alignment, articulation, and artistic expression will be the primary focus, as movers will be called upon to access their individual performance skills to bring a unique expression and rhythmic sensibility to the movement.

Creative Movement
As an individual class or extended series, this program will introduce participants to the basic elements of dance – space, time, energy and relationship. Socialization skills such as turn-taking and following instructions will be emphasized. Through games and movement exercises, we will have fun while developing coordination, spatial awareness, team building, confidence and creative expression.

Contemporary/Modern Technique
This class focuses on achieving efficiency while exploring athletic and dynamic phrase work that is a combination of safety release technique, Bartenieff Fundamentals, and Kristi Faulkner's unique brand of quirky, irreverent, and exhaustive movement. Explosive phrases juxtaposed with subtle gesture will challenge the participants' athleticism and artistic expression.  Movers will be required to access their individual performance skills to bring a unique expression and rhythmic sensibility to the movement.

Body Work
This workshop allows participants to forge connections between the mind and body to achieve restoration, improve alignment issues, and relieve unnecessary tension. Participants will engage in hands-on partner work, allowing the transfer of positive energy from one partner to the other.

Composition/Choreography Workshop
Participants will explore techniques for investigating movement ideas. Inspired by the idea that what “feels good” is not always the most interesting choice, participants will initiate the development of choreographic material and expand their artist toolbox through activities designed to create impossibilities and provoke the investigation of the mundane.

Master Classes
Master classes are available in age appropriate instruction for all levels of modern/contemporary, partnering/contact, composition, creative movement, yoga, ballet, house dance and hip-hop.
